Megacities and megaurban regions have become a focal point of economic, political and social development in the late 20th century. Many of the complex megaurban processes and structures are linked to global change processes, and many of them are strongly influenced by informal networks and institutions. In the past six years more than 100 researchers in Bangladesh, China and Germany have been collaborating within the research framework of the Scientific Priority Program "Megacities-Megachallenge. Informal Dynamics of Global Change" to explore the interlinkages of informality and global change in the megaurban contexts of Dhaka (Bangladesh) and the Pearl River Delta (China). The research program’s final colloquium will reflect this collaborative work with presentations on interdisciplinary research in the key areas of research. In order to broaden the scope of presentations and discussions, the organizers also invite presentations of papers by researchers outside the research program who work on the respective subjects.

Climate change is already affecting Europe’s ecosystems. We can expect potentially severe effects on biodiversity and ecosystem function and services in the future. The resulting challenges need to be met by appropriate action despite uncertainty about the timing and magnitude of possible climatic changes. This European conference will bring together experts from science, policy and practice to highlight and debate the importance of adapting to climate change in conservation from an ecological, policy and economic perspective, and will also showcase successful conservation partnerships across Europe. Following up on the discussions of the previous BfN/ENCA conference on biodiversity and climate change, held in Bonn in 2011, the conference in 2013 will go a step further and explore how adaptation can be put into practice.

The use of indicators to monitor our environment and to inform and diagnose environmental hazards and their impacts remains a challenge. Standardization of these monitoring efforts is of great importance in order to get reliable data for an accurate assessment of the current state of the environment and to thus form the basis for policy. This international conference will bring together experts from government departments, consultancies, and academia to meet this challenge. You are invited to submit abstracts for oral or poster presentation. Please note that each participant should only submit one abstract as the presenting author. After 01 March 2013, all submitted abstracs will be evaluated by the Conference Organizing Committee. You will be informed at 31 March 2013 if your submission is accepted for presentation.

The goal of the Hamburg Conference is to increase knowledge and management inputs through an intensive learning process of decision-making, action and evaluation. Therefore we invite contributions showing tools and actions to deal innovatively with environmental and climate-induced migration. Central and final aim of the conference is to collect evidence-based knowledge and experiences and produce an outcome document, along the lines of the Nansen Principles on Human Displacements, thus contributing to setting the future agenda on climate induced migration. Contributions from scientists, experts, practitioners and decision-makers, with a special attention to contributions coming from the Global South, are invited. The conference aims at shedding light on environmental induced migration (CIM) and on the driving forces for action. The organizer seeks to promote not only the debate around CIM but also to increase the participation, exchange of knowledge and capacity building between the Global South and the North.

Achieving sustainable development requires a transition from the current state of the human-envi-ronment system, to a more sustainable one. It is agreed upon that this transition cannot be supported by single scientific disciplinary knowledge alone. There is a need to develop tools which are able to exchange and pro¬duce knowledge at the interface between disciplines as well as between science and society. Furthermore, science should develop tools for anticipating potential outcomes of scenarios, strategies, e.g. societally relevant decisions and policies and assessing them from a sustaina¬bility perspective. Thus, two elements seem key to support a transition towards sustain¬ability from a scientific perspective: transdisciplinarity and simulation modeling. The potentials of transdisciplinary research and modeling for fostering production and exchange of knowledge between science and society to induce transitions towards sustainability are in the center of this conference. We will analyze the communalities, diffe¬ren¬ces and linkages between transdisciplinary methods and modeling tools in the con¬text of transition processes.
