The annual growth rate of atmospheric CO2 is reported to be below the average for the period 2000 – 2008. The latter brought the atmospheric CO2 concentration to the highest level during at least the past 2 million years. The global financial crisis is deemed to be the main reason for the abrupt decline in fossil fuel emissions by 1.3 per cent in 2009, whereas the drop in CO2 emissions is less than half of that anticipated one year ago.

The paper is dealing with the challenges arising from reducing global environmental risks simultaneously to meeting economic development goals. Therefore a solution for these issues requires a reorientation toward new research that better allows science and society to address the needs of decision-makers and citizens at global, regional, national, and local scales.

A veritable orchestra of Earth-observation systems is intended to make reams of data available and relevant to decision-makers. At the last summit of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO)—the organization attempting to get this ensemble performing in synchrony—initiatives were unveiled to monitor land-cover changes and forest carbon stocks. GEO delegates embraced plans to funnel data from platforms tracking everything from biodiversity to earthquake risks into a free and open database.

The research project "Coastal Futures" had been designed to extend the knowledge base for Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) by using offshore wind farming in the German North Sea as a case study for sea use change. In order to come to a holistic assessment of impacts from offshore wind farms on the coastal system, a range of existing approaches has been adopted and new methodologies have been devised. The resulting research design analytically integrates not only results of social and natural science investigations, but also links qualitative empirical research and quantitative modelling.

The compilation of studies scrutinizes interactions of land-cover/land-use change with climate in a region where the climate warming is most pronounced compared to other areas of the globe. The climate warming in the far North, and especially in the Arctic region of Northern Eurasia, affects both the landscape and human activities. Thus, human dimensions are an important aspect of the topic. State-of-the-art methods of satellite remote sensing combined with GIS and models are used to tackle science questions and provide an outlook of current land-cover changes and potential scenarios for the future. The book is directed at the broad science community including graduate students, academics and other professionals in this field.

As the security of water supply for humans and the biodiversity of rivers are often seen as competing goals, the global-scale analysis of freshwater resources considers threats to both issues, after accounting for investments in infrastructure and water services. Developing strategies that jointly address water security for humans and biodiversity are deemed as crucial by the authors. The article has been edited by scientists of GWSP.

DIVERSITAS bioDISCOVERY project: “Scenarios for Global Biodiversity in the 21st Century”
As quantitative scenarios are becoming obsolete for evaluating future socioeconomic development on ecosystem services and biodiversity, global terrestrial, freshwater, and marine biodiversity scenarios are analyzed by a range of measures including extinctions, changes in species abundance, habitat loss, and distribution shifts, as well as comparing model projections to observations. The main outcome of the publication is that the range of projected changes is broader than recent studies suggest, whilst declining biodiversity for the 21st century is projected consistently in all scenarios.

“Social dimensions of environmental change and governance” will be the guiding topic of the conference. Despite a wide discussion about the influence of environmental change on economic costs and benefits, the socio-economic causes and impacts of global environmental change and the inadequacy of policies addressing them do still not receive the needed level of attention. The conference wants to assist in building a bridge between the ongoing efforts to conceptualize, analyze and measure the social dimensions of environmental change, policies and governance structures, on the one hand, and the corresponding efforts in mainstream economic analysis on the other hand. Scientists from different social science disciplines will meet in Berlin to discuss the social dimensions of environmental change.
