The conference is part of a larger process of rethinking sustainability across the world. The conference is co-organized by the UN Global Compact Cities Programme, and one of the tasks will be to debate and build upon the recommendations of the Cities Track of the UN Global Compact Rio +20 Corporate Sustainability Forum that lead into the Rio+20 Earth Summit in Brazil in 2012. As such, the conference is not a one-off event, but rather one that contributes to a series of ongoing meetings, forums and conferences. The conference deals with the theme in two different ways: Firstly, instead of treating sustainability as a narrow ecological question framed by business as usual, it addresses the human condition across the integrated domains of economics, ecology, politics and culture. Secondly, the conference brings together the very different constituencies of academia, civil society, urban governance and business.

The SPARC (Stratospheric Processes And their Role in Climate) 2014 General Assembly will be the fifth gathering of SPARC scientists from around the globe. General Assemblies are usually held every 4 years and while one was scheduled for 2012 (following the 2008 General Assembly in Bologna), it was decided to delay the conference by two years to avoid a clash with the WCRP Open Science conference in October 2011. The 6 year gap since the previous General Assembly, and the fact that SPARC has significantly broadened its research horizons over the intervening period, will mean that this will be a landmark General Assembly. General Assemblies are opportunities for SPARC to take stock of what has been achieved, where gaps in the portfolio of research undertaken by SPARC need to be filled, and to define where SPARC needs to be moving to remain responsive to the needs of both its members and the users of SPARC research products.

The central mission of the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) is to promote theory-driven synthesis and data-driven theory in biodiversity sciences and to provide the scientific foundation for a sustainable management of biodiversity. iDiv will explore new territory with respect to communication structures and outreach. One of their main measures taken to ensure close collaboration between theoreticians, empiricists, and practitioners inside and outside of iDiv is the establishment and maintenance of networks within the scientific community and with the public. Initiating collaborations between scientists across the world is one of the central tasks of the Synthesis Centre for Biodiversity Sciences (sDiv). Building upon experiences gained in other successful synthesis programmes, we have established sDiv that offers national and international workshops, short-term postdoc positions and a sabbatical programme to foster theoretical and synthetic thinking and to boost scientific developments.

Contemporary urbanization is a process that simultaneously involves changes in livelihoods, lifestyles, connectivity and land uses. The urban-rural dichotomy including a discrete place no longer holds. There is a need for a new conceptual framework of land change and urbanization that explicitly identifies how these two processes are connected and takes into consideration these changes looking for more or less blurring places – urban continuums – that are multiply coupled/connected. The aim of this special issue is to explore cutting edge, state-of-the-art research that examines and visualizes how urbanization and land change are connected through space and across time. Prospective authors are invited to contribute to this Special Issue of Land by submitting an original manuscript of their latest research in this particular area.

Management of the city through Spatial Planning requires a comprehensive approach that is expected to be able to accommodate the interests of stakeholders and aspects of social equity. Local wisdom is an effort in order to realize the sustainable society through a contextual approach and a participatory approach. Excavation concept or theory, and the best practices on indigenous knowledge obtained from past designs (traditional setting, modern setting) can improve the urban planning process. The Urban development policy as outlined in planning regulations should be able to accommodate local wisdom as an attempt to provide the specific characters of a city. Understanding the potential wisdom of stakeholders is important to create an environment of harmony for sustainable society in planning process.
