The SOLAS Summer School is a biennial, international event that brings together over 70 students and 15 world-leading international scientists, in a variety of fields, for a combination of lectures and practical workshops. It aims to teach the skills and knowledge of the many disciplines needed to understand the nature of ocean-atmosphere interactions. It allows doctoral students and early-career researchers to see how their work fits into the broad canvas of SOLAS, and global change research more generally.

The Workshop, stimulated by the principal scientific findings and uncertainties presented in the WMO/UNEP Ozone Assessment 2010, as well as significant issues that remain unresolved, will address the following questions:
- How well do we understand the mechanisms relating Antarctic ozone loss to tropospheric climate in the Southern Hemisphere?
- Ho will greenhouse gas concentration increases and ozone depletion/recovery interact in future and what will be their impacts on the polar vortex and on troposphere climate?
- What don’t we know, and what observing or research programs need to be undertaken?

This workshop aims to attract members of the atmospheric, ocean, wave and sea-ice community with an interest in developing coupled forecasting systems targeting short- to medium-range prediction to review the status of research and to debate the potential benefits, gaps and priorities for making advances. The workshop has been endorsed by the GODAE OceanView Science Team (GOVST) and the Working Group for Numerical Experimentation (WGNE). The forum will review the status, gaps and scientific challenges for the following topics as they relate to coupled prediction: observations, physical parameterisations; dynamical modelling; and data assimilation.

The workshop objective is to seek feedback and involvement from all participants on i) Future Earth’s revised research framework; ii) Future Earth’s organizational design; and iii) a timeline and practical arrangements for transition to a fully operational Future Earth programme, including the transition and active involvement of your core projects. This is a consultative workshop, the results of which will be used by the Future Earth leadership (the Transition Team, the Transition Management Board, and the Future Earth Scientific Committee, when appointed) to finalise the overall Future Earth framework and design, and guide its implementation. The ISSC and ICSU, in collaboration with the DFG, are planning to assemble a large group of young researchers with diverse research perspectives to reflect on Food Futures and debate relevant issues as part of a series of conferences on Integrated Science. The aim is to bring together creative multidimensional, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives to address such a complex topic like food systems. These early career scientists will ask what are and will be the challenges related to food, now and in the future, and they are expected to devise the next generation of research programmes and projects, looking for a suitable definition and means to reach global sustainability goals.

The NCCR Climate, Switzerland's Centre of Excellence in Climate and Climate Impact Research, invites young scientists to join leading climate researchers in the scenic Swiss Alpine village of Grindelwald for keynote lectures, workshops and poster sessions on the occasion of the 12th NCCR Climate Summer School 2013. The 12th International NCCR Climate Summer School is focusing on the theme "From climate reconstructions to climate predictions". This theme has been chosen due to its paramount importance in terms of both scientific challenges and pressing societal concerns. The conference aims to explore the social, cultural and political changes induced by earth scientists and the knowledge and institutions they have created over the last two centuries. The conference will look at the issue of social change through the lens of earth matters. What do we learn about societies, their norms and collective mentalities by analysing how people dealt with planet earth, its history, climate, surface patterns, or the mechanisms underlying its dynamic structure? The IPO in Tsukuba is located at the Center for Global Environmental Research of the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES). The successful candidate will work with the GCP Science Steering Committee (SSC), and other GCP offices to implement the science framework of the GCP, particularly in the area of urban carbon management. GCP is seeking a person with excellent working knowledge of the policy-relevant scientific objectives of the GCP and a keen interest in devising methods to integrate social and policy sciences into the understanding of the carbon-climate system as a coupled human/natural system. The proposed symposium is the next in a series of high-profile workshops held by the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) Working Group on Ocean Model Development (WGOMD). We aim to advance the state-of-knowledge of projections of future sea level by focussing on two major scientific challenges. Firstly, what is the global sea-level rise contribution from the stability (or otherwise) of ice-sheet mass exchanges with the oceans. Secondly, what is the regional signature of sea-level rise associated with the mass redistribution of both the changing ocean and ice sheets. Together, these components of sea-level rise inform knowledge of potential coastal impacts, and contribute to the understanding of a topic currently drawing intense scientific and societal interest. World Social Science (WSS) Fellows are early career scientists with a proven track-record in their field, and a keen interest in interdisciplinary work on global priority problems with particular relevance to developing country contexts. World Social Science Fellows are competitively selected to participate in the programme's seminars and become member of an international network of Fellows. At least half of each group of Fellows will be based in the global South and we will look for balance along lines of gender and disciplinary spreak in the selection process. Fellows are expected to participate actively in the programme, and to help build the network for future activities.

This conference will serve as a creative, innovative and inspirational gathering that catalyzes new insights on transformation processes and the implications for research, policy and practice. Climate change is considered by many to be the greatest challenge to humanity -- a "perfect storm" that will lead to unprecedented social and ecological impacts unless addressed in a comprehensive, urgent manner. Yet there is a growing recognition that traditional, "business-as-usual" approaches to mitigation and adaptation are insufficient to address the breadth, scale and complexity of challenges associated with climate change. In fact, there have been many calls for new modes of thinking about multiple interacting processes, policies, and programs, and both scientific and policy discourses increasingly emphasize the need for deliberate transformation in response to climate change. There are, however, significant research gaps on transformation that are critical to address. The "Transformation in a Changing Climate" conference aims to fill these gaps by bringing together diverse perspectives on deliberate transformation in response to climate change.

Im Hinblick auf die Tagung wird im Auftrag der Schweizerischen Akademie der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften (SAGW) eine Studie durchgeführt, welche den Stand der geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung in der Schweiz zum Thema Ressourcenverwendung erhebt. Die kritische Diskussion dieses Überblickes zum Forschungsstand in der Schweiz soll Defizite sowie die Entwicklungsbedingungen aufzeigen. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) and its partner organisation in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), have developed a new initiative to enhance scientific cooperation in the field of global change research and announce a joint call for Brazilian-German proposals. The aim of this call is to invite joint Brazilian-German proposals which contribute to the theme: "Land-use Change and Land-use Management under Conditions of Global Change". The overall aim of this joint funding of projects is to study the ecological and socioeconomic effects of land-use change and land-use management and its interaction with global change.

Institutions are considered here in their broader sense, including social representations, norms, rules of the game, collective action processes and power dimensions, forms and types of exploitation, informal and formal organizations, referring at large to governance aspects and dealing with the large spectrum of topics developed in the field of Ecological Economics. The conference builds on two preceding events: the EWACC2010 and the Solar Energy for Science/Building Bridges conference in 2011. The first two days of the conference will address climate change, fresh water availability and in particular energy security in the region. There is a widespread consensus that the pressing issues of Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought (DLDD) are not yet properly included and addressed in today's political and private sector agendas on a global, national and local level.
The UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference therefore aims to gather a broad range of stakeholders - academics, policy makers, civil society actors and the private sector - to approach DLDD from an economic perspective.
The conference will provide guidance to governments and non-governmental actors alike, on why they should and how they can, together, reverse current DLDD trends, support affected countries and communities to improve their land management practices and increase resilience.

The PAGES Open Science Meeting (OSM) held once every four years is the premier event in the PAGES calendar. The 4th PAGES OSM 2013 will be an international and multi-disciplinary platform for sharing latest research results and the venue for defining the role of past global change science for the next decade. The 4th Open Science Meeting is being hosted by the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR), an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES, Government of India), which is a nodal organization for implementation of Indian polar research programmes. This is the fifth and final Regional Conference in Dhaka of the Priority Program 1233 "Megacities – Megachallenge: Informal Dynamics of Global Change" funded by the German Research Foundation. In the frame of the program researchers from Bangladesh, China and Germany have worked on main processes and challenges of urban development trying to conceptualize the increasingly complex, globalized and informal dynamics in both cities during the last six years (2006-2012). The 2012 Sustainable Irrigation Conference provides a unique forum for multidisciplinary discussion. The objective of the meeting is to generate debate and ideas about how to make irrigation more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable. The conference theme acknowledges that sustainability is not a fixed and clearly defined objective, rather it is a goal that is always changing as knowledge and biophysical realities alter. In that sense, moving towards sustainability is a journey with an ever evolving destination. The International Opportunities Fund is a joint funding call between the Belmont Forum and G8 Heads of Research Councils (G8HORCs) for approximately 20M Euros. Many works exist on drying-up of water (rivers, lakes, marsh or sources) insisting on resources reduction in volume at sub-basins or basins scale, but very little discuss societal dimension. Then how does one perceive these resources shrinking impacts on human activities at local, basins, national or regional scales? How could one cure these various levels?
Objectives:
- To capitalize knowledge (traditional and current) on water resource challenges, socio-economic impacts and attenuation and adaptation strategies of local communities in Africa;
- To contribute to minimize water problems in climate change context;
- To share and diffuse the assets near local communities for a better appropriation of the durable management appropriateness’s of water questions in Africa.

LuWQ2013 is an international and interdisciplinary conference on the cutting edge of science, management and policy to minimise effects of agriculture and land use changes on the quality of groundwater and surface waters.
Objectives of the conference are:

In the context of its Climate and Global Environmental Change Design Project, the ISSC has worked with the support of Sida and the cooperation of key partners to develop a consolidated, global social science research agenda on climate and global environmental change. The results of this work have now been published in a report on The Transformative Cornerstones of Social Science Research for Global Environmental Change. This key output synthesizes and interprets the results of an international consultative process that included a survey of researchers from the social, behavioural and economic sciences, as well as historians and philosophers. It forms the basis for a proposed 10-year global research funding and coordination programme, and is further intended to inform social science work on global environmental change within the ISSC and beyond. The aim of this workshop will be to discuss the outcomes of the site modelling and to harmonise the inputs for upscaling activities. For this purpose we would like to invite both modellers and data providers from individual sites, as well as people who have knowledge of upscaling activities or access to input datasets to attend and contribute to the workshop.

Future Earth – research for global sustainability, will provide a cutting-edge platform to coordinate scientific research which is designed and produced in partnership with governments, business and, more broadly, society.

World Social Science Reports address key social science challenges posed by fast changing global realities, evaluate social science contributions and capacities to respond to them, and make recommendations for future research practice and policy. Potential contributors should send an expression of interest to the WSSR Director by 20 July 2012 at the latest, explaining in no more than a page:

The report presents a new economic index, which looks beyond the traditional short term economic and development yardsticks of gross domestic product (GDP) and the Human Development Index (HDI). The Inclusive Wealth Index (IWI) assesses changes in a country’s productive base, including produced, human, and natural capital over time. By taking a more holistic approach, the IWI shows governments the true state of their nation’s wealth and the sustainability of its growth. Twenty countries were assessed in the IWR 2012 over a period of 19 years (1990-2008). Together they represent more than half of the world population and almost three quarters of world GDP and include high, middle, and low-income economies on all continents. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a secondment with the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the UK's National Oceanography Centre (NOC) for the position of Director of the International CLIVAR Project Office (ICPO), located at NOC's Southampton headquarters. The secondment period will be until 31 March 2014. You will take a leading role in the implementation and coordination of CLIVAR activities under the general guidance of the CLIVAR Scientific Steering Group. Having lead responsibility for CLIVAR, you will direct the implementation of the plans and activities of each of the project elements of CLIVAR in support of the overall mission and strategy of WCRP.

In pursuit of this mission, ICSU plans and coordinates international research programmes, notably in the area of global environmental change. This new position is for a highly organised project coordinator, who will work with the ICSU staff in Paris and the regions and liaise closely with SIDA. Examples of work tasks include providing support to organize scientific meetings, drafting science reports, budget management and financial reporting. It is foreseen that this person will play a key role in preparing a follow-up application for longer-term funding from SIDA and other potential donors. Some international travel will be required.

This workshop and public event will use many of the insights gained through the EU-funded project on Climate Change, Hydro-conflicts and Human Security to apply a critical approach to the securitization process by identifying: 1) the rationale behind the securitization process, 2) the probable countries, resources and political contexts that are prone to securitization, 3) the potential benefits and risks of securitizing water (and other natural resources) and 4) the proper points for policy intervention and for cases in which the risks outweigh the benefits of securitization, the institutional structures that may be able to de-securitize a resource.

The conference is meant to summarise current knowledge on past, present and future climate changes of the high latitudes in both hemispheres. Climate change is amplified in high latitudes. High latitudes interact with lower latitudes and a number of key processes of global significance are involved. The Conference will cover both empirical studies and modeling studies (e.g. results from the CMIP5 and CORDEX experiments). ?The Scientific Programme Committee has set up a broad range of topics to be covered by invited and contributing oral presentations and poster sessions. After several years of international negotiations, representatives of more than 90 Governments established IPBES in Panama City on Saturday 21 April afternoon, at the end of the second session of the IPBES plenary (16-21 April, in Panama City, Republic of Panama). The Key Contact Workshop (KCW) organized by MRI-Europe is a 1-day event facilitating and fostering the dialogue between scientists with various backgrounds. The three work tools, namely written research summaries, snapshot presentations, and small working groups, stimulate interdisciplinary thinking and allow peers to take a fresh look at your research. The workshop accommodates a maximum of 24 speakers/working group chairs, and a few additional participants from a broad range of fields and disciplines from both natural and social sciences. KCWs usually precede major conferences that mountain researchers anyway attend. They offer an additional platform to scientists interested in the dialogue with peers from other disciplines.

NORDIC WATER 2012 is all about hydrology in its widest sense. The main theme will focus on catchment restoration and water protection. This Summer School will be the third in the successful ClimECO series. While maintaining the general topic of climate change and marine ecosystems, ClimECO3 extends the modelling of end-to-end marine food webs to include the human dimension, considering A view towards Earth System models: Human-natural system interactions in the marine world. IMBER (Integrated Marine Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Research) focuses on interactions and linkages between biogeochemical cycling and food webs, with the aim of improving predictive capability for marine ecosystems. This is an interdisciplinary summer school. We welcome applications from both natural and social scientists working on topics related to oceans and climate change who are interested in the challenge of crossing the barriers between disciplines.
